Update: Release 13 is now live in the Windows Store!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's been a crazy weekend of coding, and the switch from using the NOAA weather database to one that supports International weather is now complete! The coding part wasn't the hard part. The hard part was finding a suitable web service that would provide a reasonable amount of information without charging a ton of money. Thanks to the folks at World Weather Online, I now have what I need to provide weather to those of you outside the United States, which is a significant number of you as of late.
Read on for more information about the new features!
If you had previously used the Weather module, the operation is largely the same for you now. Your old default zip code will still even be saved when you bring it up. The difference is that now in addition to searching by zip code, you can also use some international postal codes, or search by city and country name. For example, you can type in "London" and it will find your most likely choice. If you happen to live in a city called London that is not in the UK, you will also want to add the country name such as "London, Canada". I've also tried some Canadian postal codes in there and they seem to work as well. Personally I would search by city if it will find your city because it makes for the best display at the top. The web service does not return city names to me if you search by zip code. Perhaps some day I will implement some type of lookup feature that can find out, but for now I figured that having it functional for areas outside the United States was the priority.
You may also notice that the extended forecast is now 5 days instead of 7. This is due to the weather information I'm able to obtain. However, this one may actually be more useful to you. This one actually gives you 5 days from the current date, whereas the old one ran Sunday-Sunday and so if you were looking at it on Friday, you only had 2 days of advance weather and 5 days of history.
So, lucky (for my international users) Release 13 will include International Weather and has been submitted to the store this afternoon. I'm not sure of the timeline on the next release yet, or what will be in it. Hopefully the significant updates from this weekend will hold you over for a week or two!
Please continue sending me ideas on what you want to see added, or if you would like to see new functionality in the existing modules.
I would love to see it incorporated with your twitter and maybe he facebook acct too. How awesome would that be? The weather part of the app keeps causing crashes of the app, and also the logs won't recognize the video camera, which is built in to he windows RT Surface device.
ReplyDeleteHello,
DeletePlease send me an e-mail so we can work out the cause of the crashing you are having. I will also look into why the camera might not be working.
