Feature Requests

With a quickly growing number of users across the various apps we have, it was about time to make a consolidated place where we can keep track of everything that people would like to see added to any of the apps. A large percentage of the features that have been added since the initial release were ones requested by users, so don't be afraid to ask. It will make the applications better for everyone! Please make any feature requests in the comments below.

  1. Leave requests anonymously if you wish
  2. Please indicate which application you are wanting features for, such as [LCARS Interface (Windows 8)], [LCARS Sim (Windows Phone 8)], [LCARS SIM (Windows Phone 7)], etc.
  3. Feel free to continue e-mailing feature requests as well, as that will likely result in more personal discussion of what you are looking for. We may add them to this list so everyone else can see if the features have a chance of being added soon.

Occasionally we will clean up the comments as some of them are addressed in the apps.
Some of the features that have been requested here that have been added:
  • "ViewScreen- avi loop of moving stars with sound effect.
Than add speed control/ warp 1 x1 warp 5 x1.5 increasing playback speed." (Added as part of the Conn module!)
  • Fire phases and photons regularly (Added as part of the Tactical module!)
  • Everything is more squashed (especially the text) on non-widescreen monitors and in the Simulator, the map is messed up and the text event log overlaps the stats. (This was fixed in a recent release. All modules should now work properly with both wide and non-wide monitors.)

    1. We would love to do that!

Unfortunately there are some technical limitations for Windows 8 Store apps preventing it. They only support 1 screen. I believe in the next Windows Update (8.1) that you will be able to run two Windows 8 Store apps at once (and not just having one in Snapped mode), but then LCARS Interface is only 1 app. If they were separate ones you would be able to run multiple then. If any options come up that will allow this, be sure we will support it!

  3. Using Windows 8.

Option to add access code to logon screen would be more authentic. Could even throw in computer voice clips like "Please enter terminal access code," "This terminal has been locked," "Access code not accepted," or "Access granted."

I immediately changed my Home screen image to a Starfleet logo. Perhaps this would make a better default than the Milky Way. Could preload a bunch to choose from. There's a ton online and in various styles and types (engineering, security, medical, academy, federation, etc.). Maybe you'd run into usage rights issues? Could you just have a link to (or embed) an image search function with the term "Starfleet logo"?

Would be so cool if this could embed Skype, but probably not possible.... "You have an incoming transmission"!

    1. I've thought about the access code thing. The only issue I see is if people lock themselves out there is currently no recovery method!

We used the milky way image just as a starter. It's really meant for you to add your own (and most people probably use the Starfleet logo!). I can't include them by default for copyright reasons. Lots of LCARS apps do it but we want to keep it as legitimate as possible so we won't run into any issues later.

Skype integration is something we've wanted to add since the beginning, but there is currently no Skype API for Windows Store apps like there is for regular Windows apps. As soon as they add one we will work on getting it integrated!

    2. well windows uses a pwl file if I am not mistake to store logon passwords. I think on the same note to that the recovery method would the same as that. By using a flash recovery option like windows vista did. Or a cd. The most common is the hint phrase they use too. And if they make one. It should in turn recover the password if they answer the hint correctly it similar to banks and there security questions they use when logging in. May be it can be adapted to the program in some fashion.

    3. The idea of using Skype is not good. They charge a fee if you try to do a meeting with more then 2 people. However by using Google Hangout you can add ( I think ) up to 10 people with no fee and it would be like a Starfleet communications connection. I have already connected with 5 people at the same time and it was great and lots of fun. I have also connected with my family when I was in Puerto Rico connecting with my Daughter in North Carolina, my other Daughter in Fort Worth Texas, and my Mother in Jupiter Florida. All of us have not seen each other for a long time till then.
We use this method now when ever we can instead of the phone.

  4. Hi,
i'd like to change the stardate-startdate (like 13422 instead of 67422) and the accuracy of the clock (like 13:04:20 and 67422.4563). Is this possible?

    1. We will certainly consider adding those features! The biggest issue I see is that on lower resolutions, adding additional digits to the clock may cause things to get cut off. We will definitely do some experimenting with this to see if it is possible. Thanks for the request!

  5. Would love to see an RSS feed - a ticker perhaps or just a list of the latest headlines (and teaser paragraph) from a user selectable source.

Wikipedia is an interesting idea. The current problem is the webview component for Windows Store apps is not up to par with even the one for Windows Phone. This leads to some unexpected behavior and we don't want to release something that doesn't work well. We are looking into some other options, as a web browser has been something that's been requested quite a bit.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That would be pretty awesome...unfortunately Microsoft doesn't give us that kind of access to the system from a Windows Store app! Store apps have to play in their own little sandbox and can't know much of anything about the computer it is running on.

  10. Great App (Windows 8)! How about adding an alarm-clock feature (like in the episode "Schisms" from TNG) for the clock and a black screen feature (so the app is still running) with maybe one or two of the typical LCARS graphics displayed in the corner. Similar to the Engineering station on the bridge before the Chief Engineer transfers the Engineering station to the bridge. Just a thought.

Someone else already threw out Skype but web interaction/RSS would be great. I imagine Microsoft has it locked down but if the system allocation screen could actually have some of the real system allocation data on it... even better.

  11. Awesome app. Obviously lots of possibilities for the future also.

One thing that I have to agree with from a recent review, however; Everything looks authentic except those darn weather icons. I'm assuming this is pulled-in from an outside source, so maybe you can't do it, but it sure would be nice to have the weather icons re-created in a more trek-type feel.

    ReplyDelete

    1. You are correct...they are supplied by the service giving the weather data. It may be possible to change them and use a different set if we can find something more appropriate.

Even if there is just some way to "process" the existing icons to remove the blue background and set it to black. I think that would do the trick.

    3. I will look into possibly using some different ones. There will be some work required to use something other than the supplied ones but it should be possible.

  12. Something you might consider for the future. I'm one of those hobbyists that installed a "Car PC" (aka "carputer"). (Some pictures at https://plus.google.com/109046344933102015650/posts/fbHonZAHipi). Your LCARS program already includes many of the parts of a Car PC front-end, such as weather and media browser. The parts that would still be needed would be:
    (1) Interfacing with an existing HD Radio box
    (2) Interfacing with an existing PC Navigation program
    (3) (optional) Providing a phone dialer via Bluetooth

Currently, I am using a front-end called "Centrafuse", but am in the process of switching to one called "FreeIce". I have to say, however, that an LCARS front-end would be the ultimate thing to have. It might not be a huge market, but there are plenty of us.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I actually built a Car PC as a senior design project...that was years ago with a lot less options than we have now though. What operating system does your computer run?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Windows 8. If you'd like, we could discuss further via email. I would think that looking through code for some of the existing front-ends would give some good insight into how they interface with HD Radio. My unit, which is a common one for CarPC makers, is the "Directed HD Radio", which uses a COM port for control. There is no actual in-the-car front panel for it. It's a hidden box inside behind the dash.

Heres a small easy tweak in case you just run out of stuff to do...have the "self-destruct" audio alert count down the last 10 seconds(unless it would not be accurate to its legacy) until destruct, Destruct, DESTRUCT!! 2. well you can add in a silent countdown feature similar to when janeway blew up the ship when the vidiens. Took over the ship when the ship went threw the rift and it split in to two. And add a feature to that you can choose which klaxon you use during the alarm. Like the tng or voyager or ds9 klaxon alarms. just a thought. I love the app so far and can not wait for new features

      Delete
    3. You can already make the countdown silent by setting red alert to false and setting silent to true. The klaxon used for the destruct timer will be the same one selected in the options which right now is a choice between TNG or Voyager.

    1. I will certainly look into this issue. I believe it is just pulling the cover image that the thumbnail for the file generates. I will see if there is a way to make it use the higher quality image or not.

A volume slider is discouraged by Microsoft as they want you to use keyboard media controls or hardware buttons on tablets. Plenty of media players, good and bad, in the store have them though so we might as well put it in there also. Shouldn't be too difficult. Thank you!

I would love if the Log feature could recognize Tex files as well as txt files. Just so one could write in Latex in the editor as well. If it compiles great but that might be to much of a hassle. Just having it recognize tex files so that you could open them in the log feature and treating them like txt files should be simple enough and would be nice.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That is something we would like to do! However, currently Windows Store apps have restrictions that make this pretty difficult to accomplish. Currently the Clock module audio warnings and such are only possible if the app is currently in view. Waking up the device from sleep is an issue we haven't found a real solution to yet. We don't want to be responsible for someone's alarm not going off correctly, so we've held off on releasing an alarm clock until we make sure it's going to work!

    1. We have been gradually adding the infrastructure to be able to link the ship systems together to some extent. There are still a lot of details to work out, but we will get there!

The development mode is something that would cause the app to fail certification from Microsoft, as they don't allow incomplete features. The Windows Phone Store allows us to have beta versions of apps, and so the Windows Phone version of LCARS Interface does have a beta version where we test new features. If Windows Store apps ever support the same feature, we will certainly open it up to those who wish to test it out!

    3. Excellent stuff. I'd almost given up on LCARS stuff. Seen so many over the years that look decent but unless they actually DO something you soon lose interest. This is phenomenal work. Here's my little wishes:

Log editor search: enter a search term and find txt files in the current directory that contain it.

Atmosphere auto-update: every 30 mins maybe instead of having to press scan to refresh?

Night theme: can turn the brightness down of course, but would be nice - actually, Nemesis is nearly there apart from the bright text colour.

Sensor readings: these devices have loads of sensors - gps/location, accelerometer, axis, light sensors, magnetometers, audio levels etc - how about a screen displaying these values in real time? There's an app in the windows store called Sensors which gives an idea of what I mean...

    1. Thank you so much! An alarm is currently in the R&D phase and has been for a little while now. There have been issues getting it to work correctly since for an alarm to work it has to be able to wake the device from sleep mode and run even when the app is not open. There are ways to work within Microsoft's rules to accomplish this, they just haven't seemed to work correctly enough yet to where we'd be comfortable releasing the feature when people might end up late for work if it decides not to work! We will work this into the app as soon as we are confident that it will work as intended all the time!

A fantastic, well executed, lovely little details, but also very useful application. Please keep growing it. 52. What a great app have both the PC version and Phone version, guys you should advertise this on a non Trekie version as I think lots of people would like an app like this and not just the Trekie fans.
As a programmer myself this has so much potential and personally I would like to see a version that medical information could be stored in. Such as medical details and conditions, medications and various contacts such as emergancy contacts, doctors or health care workers. Also with the ability to log certain conditions and results such as blood glucose readings and blood pressure. A medical history option with notes so when say reading such as blood sugars are high you can enter a note. If possible with the phone version a lock screen with emergancy contact information and possibly the ability to send a text for help message to a selected contact and the text message also sends GPS location. Call it a medical triquater if that's how you spell it lol. Maybe it can be intregated into Microsoft HealthVault or at the basics into a folder on OneDrive under medical. A simple graph on it to show trends of the readings you put on it and so on. Its all just a thought but a lot of people use these types of programs these days and the ability to have this would be great. One thing though if you do ever do anything like this please allow for various selections of readings as for example in the UK we use slightly different measurement types to the US. I have so many simple yet great ideas for a medical version. Keep up the great work steve_clews@hotmail.co.uk

    1. Some very good ideas! The medical area is a bit tricky, as storing medical information runs into a lot of legality issues so it has to be stored with a lot of special requirements. It might be possible to come up with a solution that only includes things which don't fall under those rules, though.

For now you can make logs of whatever you want with the log editor...it just won't be formatted in the way you probably want. There are some possibilities though...I will look into this farther and see exactly what would have to be done.

      Delete
    2. Thank you for you reply and yes understand the problems with medical info and legalities I suppose that would fall under a user disclaimer in many ways. As you mention you can keep logs on anything which is what I am doing and I just transfer the info taken into OneNote for medical stuff.
Great app and I am just loving it. steve_clews@hotmail.co.uk

Due to limitations of the Windows Store and Windows Phone platforms, we are not able to manually force the application to exit. All app lifetime decisions are made by the operating system, or can be manually overridden by the user when you close apps from the switcher.

    WOW WOW WOW!!!
This was my first purchase as an 18 year old and I'm blown away!
Its an incredible app, and I'd really love to see either the password logon with sound effects (please please oh please!) or a news feed, this is a beautiful app that I am recommending to EVERYONE!

...what about an internal and external scanner?
Running diagnostic and crew checks on your ship and others with diagrams and custom damage/personnel loss results? :D
With different Enterprise models or Birds of Prey etc this could be so cool!!

    1. Currently the transporter should give the appropriate sound effects when the "sliders" are pulled all the way up or down (depending on what mode it is in). We would like to add more interactivity to this screen in the future, though we are still working on the details of what exactly you will be able to change.

Some of the other things you mentioned are also in the works...our To-Do list for these apps is light years long right now!

I think it might be a fun novelty to do a little of my coding in the lab on my touchscreen ultrabook remotely. I can't compile SPARC assembly on my windows machine so I always have to ssh into ieng9 over here st UCSD and so on.

Maybe even just a command prompt terminal, I could probably figure out the rest.

  61. Something that I noticed is when I use the transport. With each Star Trek series, whenever someone from the crew used the transporter, each ship had its own transport visual and audio. Maybe you could update the transporter sounds to include all of the Star Trek series. I know its something minor but I really would like to make this app sound a little bit more like Voyager.

    1. We do have plans to modify the behavior of both console layout and sound effects based on the class of ship you have. Currently that is not something you can change, but we want to get to it eventually...in the short term it may be possible to let you select one similar to how the Red Alert works where you can pick the one you want to use. I will look into this.

  64. maybe adding something like a map application. maybe in transporter or helm.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Hey there. I'm currently using the Windows 8 LCARS application, and I've found what a joy it has brought me in my life.

Now, as you do requests / suggestions, I've come up with a few of my own for possible usage.
    1. Alert systems
I think it'd be pretty nifty if we could have more than just Red Alert, maybe Blue and Yellow alerts as well. It'd be nice if you could have, as I have set mine up to be, the Defiant and have it go to cloaking.
    2. A responsive Tactical / Conn display
I think it'd benefit the crewmen that use it if they could 'see' the results of their efforts on the little display. Maybe a little setting with possible enemies, or just the animation of phasers / torpedos arcing into space, or planets that you reach upon going to warp.
    3. Ship customization:
Now I realize that not all ships have had their LCARS information put up, but an idea I had was, in addition to name customization, the ability to have interactive displays of your vessel. Perhaps you're not always in a Galaxy-class, but an Intrepid or something similar. I feel it'd be pretty cool to be able to do 'damage control' on your ship, especially in Simulator mode.
    4. Linking applications:
If two systems could 'interact' with one another via internet or Bluetooth, I feel that'd be a bit nifty for those who Roleplay with this, or just want to have some fun with a family / friend.

I've got a few more, but I'm rather curious as to how this will turn up as a whole before I get into more ideas. I'm not a programmer, so I really don't know what of what I said is actualy feasible or logical.

    Many thanks,
    Wedge Antilles

    1. Some very good ideas in there! Many of them are actually on our list to do already. Multiple alert types will eventually be added. Enhancements to the tactical and navigation are planned, we just haven't figured out exactly how to do it since that type of stuff is typically external view or main view screen stuff and not done on the displays themselves. We are working on it though!

Ship customization is also already being worked on. This one is going to take a while though, as we need to design brand new layouts for systems that already exist in another layout. And we have to do all of them at once! This will also likely impact the color themes which may not be desired. We still haven't worked out how exactly that will work yet.

Linking applications is also something we've looked into. With Windows 8 and Windows Phone there is the ability to have the apps connect to each other relatively easily. We are in the process of figuring out what exactly the capabilities will be, such as whether you can fire Phasers from a Phone device which don't make too much sense. But theoretically you could have 4 computers set up and each control a system, and have the others react to it. The design of this system and how it will work is much more difficult than the actual coding of it is! but we are working on it...

Sorry that we don't have any information on when all of this will happen, but development on this project will continue for a long time yet. We have huge plans and not enough time to do all of it!

Please keep your suggestions coming though. You never know when something will fit right into an update we do, and if so we will certainly do it.

      Delete
    2. Well, I'm glad to hear that some of my ideas are already in the works. As proud as I feel in my head to come up with these ideas, knowing they're in the works is much more important to me.

A few other suggestions, as you do wish to know, are:

      A comm system
      Different torpedoes
      Attack patterns
      Actual System Allocation responses
      More Weather options
More functionality to the 'D-pad' system

Thanks for responding so quickly. I was honestly surprised to refresh and see that you replied.

    3. Some more good ones, and several are in the plans. What type of additional Weather options are you looking for? As for the D pad, what else would you like to see that control do? Currently it's used in several places throughout the application.

We do our best to reply to every comment and every e-mail we get quickly! The reason this page exists is to keep in touch with people using our apps so we can figure out what people like and don't like or additional things they would like to see it do!

      Delete
    4. Sorry about the delay, I had not realized I had not replied!

An hourly and weekly setting for the weather, rather than solely a five-day outlook, I feel would be rather helpful. Also, maybe a rotating little globe there with a little navigational set up, 'triangulating' your location when you go to your location. Similar to the way Star Wars Battlefront would have its loading screen.
The D-pad can have many applicational purposes, as I noticed that it had little to no function on the transporter ( or so I felt ), and the responsiveness in Tactical was rather lacking.

      Thanks again.

    5. Currently the weather data we are provided is limited to what's currently being displayed. We will look into being able to acquire additional data.

I like your idea for the weather! Some additional animation there would be pretty neat. The transporter system is in need of some enhancements as well...as is the tactical system. Some big things in the plans for both of those.

  74. I'd really would like LCARS Interface (Windows 8) and LCARS Sim (Windows Phone 8) to be an universal app, so you wouldn't have to buy it twice!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. LCARS Trek (formerly known as LCARS Simulator) actually is a Universal app now! You can use it on either platform without buying it twice. Actually, it is free to play now as well! But if you purchase it (which just removes the ads, everything else works fine in the trial) then you will own the paid version for both. Unfortunately there is no way to automatically give you the paid version of LCARS Trek on the phone if you own LCARS Interface for Windows 8, as they are different apps and can't be set up as universal in that way.

The Windows 8 LCARS Interface contains LCARS Trek, but the phone version does not due to memory constraints and some other technical problems. We made a blog post recently outlining the roadmap for how we intend to handle the transition to using Universal apps going forward in order to offer the best value. This was not possible until recently, so we weren't able to plan for it when these apps were first made.

    2. Feature Request: Programmable button(s) -- There are currently some unused buttons within the apps sections that have numbers but do nothing. Could these be linked to the user to other apps? Or to desktop apps?

    3. Number one request: a locking option to access apps. It doesn't need to be all that secure / hacker proof. A short pin code?

3a. Voice entry of the access code?

  77. First off, I am using LCARS Interface for Windows 8.1. I am suggesting edits to LCARS Interface for Windows 8.1 and for Windows Phone.

I Would love to see some more document creation apps added in. I would love to use this as my main app for everything from web browsing to document creation.

    1. Slide presentation feature: it would be nice to be able to create powerpoint presentations from within a log editor type mini app.

    2. Spreadsheet manager: this would function like excel does

    3. 'Communications' panel: I often have to read emails and otherwise communicate with people and would like to be able to do that through LCARS. I have in mind a panel where you can combine a contact list (Federation Registry), emails (transmissions), and texts [for the phone version].

    4. Color Scheme Customization feature: It would be wonderful if you could add in the ability to use custom colors for the interface. As someone who intends to use this app a lot, I would like to be able to set my own colors for the color scheme.

5: Web Browser: An incorporated web browser would be a welcome add-on considering how useful the app is otherwise. I just wish I could use it to surf the web as well.

    6. Customize the Shield Blueprints: If I change the ship name and registry number and I decide I want to be a certain class of ship, I'd like to see that reflected in the depiction of the shields. It is slightly disappointing to see the same old ship schematic even if I want to be a dreadnaught class or something along those lines.

  81. Love this app! Always have a great time playing around with all its features, no matter how many times I've done it!

    Feature Suggestions:

    1) Possibility to upload own computer sound/voice files, instead of using the preprogrammed Microsoft computer voice (say, if, for example, I, or anyone, had a very well organized list of sound files featuring the REAL Star Trek computer voice ...)? That way you wouldn't be infringing on any copyright laws, whilst still allowing die-hard fans of Star Trek, and the oh so famous computer voice, the ability to get just that much closer to the real thing...

    2) Integrate the option to allow random anomalies, physical and/or interstellar, to manifest/come into action, each of which has it's own unique and negative affect on the ship/ship's systems. Additionally, for all of these different types of anomalies, there should also be a way to find out what the cause was/where it came from, and thus resolve the problem, using the various different LCARS OPS screens (ie. communication, transporters, weaopons array, helm control, etc.);

WakingNews Alarm Clock is yet another beta app release with some potential. It functions primarily as an alarm clock. You set an alarm as usual and it goes off on time as usual. However, this one reads you the news from a variety of sources when it goes off. So it functions a little bit like old school radio alarm clocks. It has several good news sources, including Yahoo Finances, Yahoo Sports, Engadget, etc. However, there are some lesser sources of words there as well. Thankfully, you can choose the sources that play when the alarm goes off. It's in beta so there are definitely bugs. It is also free and has potential.
